San Diego Surf Soccer Club, Surf Cup Soccer Tournaments and Soccerloco Announce Multi-Million Dollar Partnership

San Diego, California – Dateline January 3nd, 2013 – Surf Soccer Club, Surf Cup and Soccerloco announced a four-year, multi-million dollar Title Sponsorship Agreement today, January 2, 2013. The agreement signed on Friday, December 28th allows Soccerloco exclusive Title Sponsorship rights for the highly rated Surf Cup youth soccer tournaments and the nationally competitive teams of Surf Soccer Club based in San Diego, California.

The Surf Cup tournament is considered one of the top three youth soccer tournaments in America. The annual highly competitive youth soccer tournament is held in July, attracts teams from across the country and last year celebrated it’s XXXII competition. The prestigious Surf College Cup, held in November is recognized as one of the top recruiting tournaments in the U.S attracting top college coaches from throughout the U.S. who travel to San Diego to identify college scholarship hopefuls. Soccerloco is now the Title Sponsor of both the nationally acclaimed Surf Cup and the Surf College Cup.

The two tournaments will be renamed “SoccerLoco San Diego Surf Cup Presented by Nike” and “Soccerloco San Diego Surf College Cup Presented by Nike” respectively. In addition, over 800 Surf Soccer Club players will wear jerseys with the Soccerloco logo and the club will make all equipment purchases through Soccerloco.com.

John Lococo, CEO of Soccerloco, says, “Soccerloco is thrilled to be involved with the Surf Cup tournaments and the Surf Soccer Club. I consider this new title sponsorship a tremendous opportunity to launch this partnership on the national stage. We’re excited to take one of America’s best youth soccer tournaments and club to the next level and to bring our tournament and retail expertise to this partnership. Our company has always been committed to partnering with highly regarded soccer organizations and Surf Cup and Surf Soccer Club definitely fit that description.”

Mike Connerley, President of San Diego Surf Cup remarked, “It has been a pleasure working with John Lococo and Soccerloco as a vendor of Surf Cup over the past ten years. I am now very excited and pleased with the Title sponsorship agreement we executed this week. This partnership will allow both companies as well as the Surf Soccer Club to achieve even greater success over the next four years.”

From the perspective of the Surf Soccer Club, San Diego’s premier youth soccer club for players age 7 to 18, the agreement is important for the long-term success of the club.

Jeremy McDonald, President of San Diego Surf Soccer Club, says “For Surf Club, the signing of this major sponsorship deal is a truly historic event.” McDonald continues, “As San Diego county’s only club to participate in both the ECNL (Elite Clubs National League) and the US Soccer’s Development Academy, we expect the sponsorship to have an immediate impact on the quality and number of programs and services currently offered. The sponsorship will enable Surf to increase the excellence of our high-quality training, hire more youth soccer coaches and help offset the high costs for players of the ECNL and US Development Academy. We are honored to partner with the highest quality retailer and the highest quality tournament in the nation.”

U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati announced today the hiring of Tom Sermanni as the seventh head coach in U.S. Women’s National Team history.

Sermanni, 58, comes to U.S. Soccer with 11 years of experience as a head coach in international women’s soccer – all with Australia – a period during which he led the Matildas in three Women’s World Cup tournaments.

Sermanni will officially begin his tenure as the WNT head coach on Jan. 1, 2013. U.S. Soccer Women’s Development Director Jill Ellis, who was on the bench for the USA’s two recent draws with Germany, will coach the team for the last five matches of the Fan Tribute Tour, presented by Panasonic. Due to his prior commitments with the Australia Women’s National Team as he finishes up his responsibilities with the Matildas, Sermanni will not be attending the next two matches in Portland and Phoenix. Sermanni will be observing the U.S. Women’s National Team for the last three matches of the 2012 tour, which will be announced in the near future.

The N|L|G San Diego GKiD Camp will take place on Friday, November 23rd (Girls) and Saturday, November 24th (Boys) and run in conjunction with the Surf College Cup held at the Polo Fields in Del Mar, CA. Because there are two time-slots for the GKiD Camp (9-11am and 2-4pm) the GKiD Camp will not conflict with Games so Goalkeepers participating in the Surf College Cup as well as Goalkeepers in the San Diego area can all participate. The GKiD Camp is the perfect opportunity for Goalkeepers to showcase their abilities in front of College Coaches while being trained by a staff made up of College Coaches! Goalkeepers will be put through a NON-CONTACT training session focused on shot-stopping, crosses, and distribution. Following the GKiD Camp, there will be a Question and Answer Lecture with the Goalkeepers, their parents, and the College Coaches on the Recruiting and College Search Process. Topics will include: Recruiting | Scholarships | Academic Requirements | Financial Aid | Grants | Loans | Emailing College Coaches | Life as a Student-Athlete. Goalkeepers will also be presented with helpful material on the College Search Process provided by Collegiate Development Program (CDP).
*THESE CAMP ARE OPEN TO ALL HIGH SCHOOL AGED GIRLS AND BOYS*

FROM SOCCERNATION.COM:

What does it take to come back to the field where you grew up playing soccer, recognized now as a champion with two gold medals? In a word: perseverance.

What does it take to become a champion at the highest level? For San Diego area native Rachel Buehler, the short answer is “perseverance.” Over her youth, college and international careers, Buehler has persevered, worked hard and grown as a player, earning her second Olympic gold medal with the U.S. Women’s National Team this summer in London (her first was in Beijing in 2008).

Recently the star defender returned to the San Diego Polo Fields where she played as a youth soccer player at the San Diego Surf for many years. Her coaches were Colin Chesters and Ada Greenwood – both are still coaching ar Surf.

SoccerNation’s Diane Scavuzzo joined Buehler to talk about her career and how she traveled so far from the San Diego Polo Fields, the U.S. Women’s National Team and the team’s recent gold medal in the2012 London Olympics.

SNN: How does it feel to be back at the Polo Fields where you played for so many years at Surf Soccer Club?

Rachel Buehler: It feels wonderful. This is where I really grew up playing soccer. It’s just such a beautiful spot, first of all, and being back here just makes me smile. There are definitely lots of feelings of nostalgia, and it actually makes me want to get out there and kick the ball around.

What a difference a year makes. In the big rematch between Japan and the United States, who duked it out in the Women’s World Cup final in 2011, the United States were able to do in the Olympics what eluded them in the World Cup.

Still recovering from their 123rd minute win over Canada in the semi-final, the US maintained the lead off of two dramatic goals from Carli Lloyd and a beautiful assist from Alex Morgan. The United States were able to topple Japan 2-1 in front of 80,000 fans at Wembley Stadium. In the defense, Hope Solo had a spectacular game as well posting two spectacular saves that kept the United States in the lead.

Of note to Surf Cup – Surf Soccer alumn, Rachel Buehler played the most solid series of games of her career in the hunt for her second gold medal with the team.

Youth Soccer News: After 32 Years, Surf Cup Shines Brighter than Ever

For thirty-two years Surf Cup has drawn teams from around the country and even from abroad for two weekends of intense competition.

More teams apply to this Nike sponsored youth soccer competition than accepted. Even State Cup Champions were turned away this year. Just what is it about the tournament in San Diego, California that inspires teams and clubs to put themselves on the line in order to be invited?

SoccerNation spoke with several visiting coaches and parents, as well as one long-time San Diego area coach, to find out why they come to Surf Cup. Without hesitation, every coach and parent spoke of the level of competition that brings “The Best of the Best” to the San Diego Polo Fields every summer.
