Irvine Slammers FC B99 Premier

To Europe and Back!

After winning its Flight 1 league championship in Southern California and the prestigious Manchester City tournament in San Diego, the Irvine Slammers FC B99 Premier prepped for the 2016/17 soccer season by playing top level clubs from around the world.

The team’s goal is to play world class soccer. Toward that end, in early July, after a period of fundraising and volunteer work as a team at a local soup kitchen and foodbank, they took a two-week trip to Europe.

First stop, a trip to England to play Birmingham City Academy and Notts County Academy.

There, the boys – a collection of seniors, juniors and a lone sophomore – raised their game to hang with the fast, physical English Academy teams. The Slammers also had the privilege of a morning’s training session with the Birmingham City Academy Coaches, getting a first-hand taste of football as played and coached in the English Academy. This was interspersed with experiencing the sights and sounds of the UK, including a tour of the famed Wembley Stadium.

Next, they flew to Gothenburg, Sweden for Gothia Cup 2016, the world’s biggest youth soccer competition.

The week-long tournament, featured an Olympic style opening ceremony, with 55,000 spectators and 1600 plus teams from 80 countries. Eyes were definitely opened.

On the pitch, the Slammers fared well. Playing up in age – U19, the oldest in the tourney, they faced 2 Swedish teams; a team from Mexico and another from Egypt in the opening rounds. The team qualified for the knockout stage, where they lost to a Danish team that finished its run in the semifinals.

The Slammers were exposed to the passion by which the beautiful game is played in Europe. This team of student-athletes returned to California a stronger unit, having gained valuable experience playing different styles of play and more prepared than ever to compete at the highest levels in the USA, whilst remaining focused on their academics and maintaining strong GPAs.

Bring it!
